Manchester has an important LGBTQ+ history that stretches well beyond its nightlife. Start around Canal Street and the Gay Village, where several of the city’s key queer landmarks and memorials are within a few minutes’ walk of each other.
Once you’ve explored the Village, Manchester also has major museums, galleries, theaters and cultural attractions across the city center.

The Beacon of Hope in Sackville Gardens is Manchester’s memorial to people who have died from or been affected by HIV and AIDS.
Unveiled in 2000, the memorial takes the form of a stone column topped by a glass beacon and sits just steps from Canal Street in the heart of the Gay Village.
It remains an important place of remembrance for Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community and is particularly significant during events including World AIDS Day.
